Volunteer
Bake a difference in your community
Good Bitches Baking volunteers bake and deliver treats to organisations supporting people having a tough time. Every box is a small reminder that someone cares.
Volunteering with us is flexible, meaningful and designed to fit around everyday life.
We have 32 chapters from Bay of Islands to Invercargill, and more than 3,500 volunteers helping us to bring moments of kindness every day.
What does volunteering involve?
Depending on your local chapter, you might:
-
bake
-
deliver baking
-
or both
Some chapters have separate bakers and drivers, while others ask volunteers to do both roles. Every chapter operates a little differently, meeting the needs of their local communities. Once you sign up, you’ll receive information specific to your area.
How often do I need to volunteer?
We ask volunteers to commit to helping at least once a month.
Using our online rostering system, you can set your availability and choose:
-
which day(s) of the week and times work for you
-
which areas you can bake and deliver or deliver to
-
how many times you can volunteer in a month
-
when you’re unavailable or away
While volunteering is flexible, we rely on our volunteers being active, engaged and contributing regularly.
What does baking involve?
You’ll bake something simple in your own home and pack it into one of our GBB-supplied cake boxes. You can bake the same recipe every time or use this as an opportunity to try something new! What matters most is the aroha you stir in.
Each box is designed to provide enough for approximately 15–20 people. That might be:
-
one cake
-
one slice
-
one batch of muffins
-
one batch of scones
-
one batch of cookies or biscuits
-
cupcakes or other simple treats
You do not need to be an expert baker. Simple, homemade baking is perfect.
We provide:
-
food-grade cake boxes
-
ingredient flyers and a space to write a note to the recipients
-
food safety guidance
You provide:
-
the baking
-
the ingredients
-
the kindness
What does delivering bakes involve?
Delivery routes and responsibilities vary between chapters. In some chapters, you deliver your own baking. You can choose which areas in your town or city you’re happy to deliver to. You can deliver on foot, by bike, car or public transport.
In other chapters, dedicated drivers collect baking from a few other volunteers and deliver the boxes to a recipient organisation. Generally, you can choose whether you’d like to bake, deliver, or a mix of both. Some chapters do require all volunteers to help with deliveries and you’ll receive more information about that when you register. Our chapter committees work hard to make sure that pick up and drop off locations aren’t too far away.
Who receives the baking?
We deliver to local community organisations supporting people through difficult times, including refuges, hospices, food banks, mental health services, hospital wards and other support organisations.
For privacy and fairness reasons, our rostering system randomly matches volunteers to recipient organisations, so you cannot choose individual recipients or specific organisations to bake for.
We do not bake for individuals or families, we can only provide baking to our registered recipient organisations.

A note about costs
Volunteers provide their own ingredients and fuel. If cost is a barrier, our Cup of Sugar fund may be able to help.
Anyone can be a Good Bitch
“Good Bitch” is a very admiring and gender-inclusive term. You don’t need to be a professional baker, just someone who wants to make life a little brighter for others.
